EXPLORING THE SOCIO-RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE OF DE-DUA (NEW YAM FESTIVAL) AMONG TAI PEOPLE

Abstract

This research explores the socio-religious explores the socio-religious significance of De-dua (New yam festival) among the Tai people in Rivers State. The study highlights the cultural importance of the De-Dua (new yam festival), its associated customs and traditions. Emile Durkheim's Functionalist theory, which emphasizes the role of societal institutions in maintaining social stability and integration, was utilized to guide the research. The aim of the study was to under-take a critical analysis of the De-dua festival and its significance on the Tai people. Data collected from both the primary (personal observation and interview) and secondary sources were meticulously analysed through thematic and content analysis. The study revealed that the De-Dua (New Yam Festival) significantly impacts the youths of Tai Local Government Area by reinforcing cultural identity, promoting social cohesion, and imparting moral values. It notes that the festival engages youth in the cultural practice of the people. It strengthens community bonds, and educates them on respect, hard work, and community service. Based on the findings, the study recommends that efforts be made to educate the younger generation about the De-Dua Festival. This includes developing preservation methods to address the decline in indigenous knowledge of this cultural practice among the Tai people. The work concludes that by promoting awareness and education about De-Dua, the community can ensure that this important cultural heritage is maintained and appreciated by future generations.
