THE PEOPLE IN DARKNESS HAVE SEEN A GREAT LIGHT: EXPLORING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND RELIGIOUS IMPACTS OF MISSIONARY ACTIVITIES IN AFRICA AND THEIR CHALLENGES FOR 21ST-CENTURY EVANGELISM

Abstract

This study offers a glimpse into the triumphant narratives of those who have traversed the darkness and emerged into the light.  The study looks at the complex and far-reaching impacts of Christian missionaries in Africa.  The legacy of missionaries has shaped African societies in profound ways, influencing economic development and dependency, education and cultural exchange, Healthcare and medical infrastructure, religions diversity and syncretism and cultural identity and preservation.  The study examines ―The People in darkness have seen light‖: A socio-economic and religious impact of missionaries in Africa: A challenge to the 21st Century Evangelism. This research adopts a historical, analytical, prescriptive, and theological methods.  The study reveals that as the world grapples with increasing complexity and diversity, it poses a challenge to twentieth-first century evangelism, inviting a re-examination of traditional approaches to spiritual growth, community engagement and discipleship. This study concludes that effective strategies for sustainable transformation and impact in the lives of individuals and communities is needed. The study recommends that cultural sensitivity and contextualization should be put in place in solving the challenged of 21st century evangelism.
