RELIGION AND ABUA MARRIAGE CULURE IN LIGHT OF MARK 10:9: STRIKING A BALANCE

Abstract

The institution of marriage from the religious view, is a sacred bond between two individuals, recognized and revered by both religion and culture. However, the intersection of religious beliefs and cultural practices can sometimes create tension and conflict. This study explores the dynamics of religion and Abua marriage culture in the light of Mark 10:9, which emphasizes the indissolubility of marriage. The research examines how Christian teachings on marriage intersect with Abua cultural practices, highlighting areas of harmony and discord. A qualitative approach was employed, combining interviews and focus group discussions with Abua Christians and religious leaders. The findings reveal that while Abua marriage culture values unity and commitment, certain practices contradict Christian teachings, leading to conflicts and misunderstandings. The study argues that striking a balance between religious beliefs and cultural practices is essential for a harmonious and fulfilling marriage. It recommends a contextualized approach to Christian teachings, taking into account Abua cultural nuances, and encourages open dialogue between religious leaders and cultural practitioners. By exploring the intersection of religion and culture, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities of marriage and offers practical insights for building stronger, more resilient marriages within the Abua community.
