ASSESSING THE EFFECT OF CHURCH GROWTH ON RURAL DEVELOPMENT OF MALETE COMMUNITY, MORO LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KWARA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of church’s numerical increase and spatial expansion on rural development in Malete, a predominantly agrarian community in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. While churches in rural areas are traditionally associated with spiritual functions, their role has expanded to include social, economic, and infrastructural contributions. The research employs a mixed-method approach, utilizing structured questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions, with data analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings reveal that church growth in Malete significantly influences important areas of rural development such as education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and social welfare. Churches have emerged as central agents of community transformation, offering vocational training, initiating welfare programs, and fostering unity and moral guidance. However, challenges such as financial constraints, limited reach, and dependency on leadership vision hinder the full realization of their developmental potential. The study concludes that while churches are instrumental in rural development, their impact can be further enhanced through strategic partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations, capacity building, and a deliberate focus on sustainable community-oriented initiatives. This research contributes to the broader discourse on religion and rural development, offering insights that can inform policy and community engagement strategies in similar rural settings across Nigeria.
